SURG 196 - Surgical Technology Capstone

This course will provide students with a comprehensive opportunity to develop a professional portfolio that showcases their employability skills, management and leadership abilities, and individual achievements. This portfolio will serve as evidence of their readiness to enter the profession as competent entry-level surgical technologists, encompassing the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. Throughout the course, students will engage in activities and assignments that allow them to reflect upon their learning journey, document their accomplishments, and demonstrate their proficiency in the required domains. PREREQUISITE(S): SURG 190 & 191.

Course Outcomes
  • Submit a comprehensive professional portfolio that effectively captures their Employability skills, management and leadership abilities, and individual achievements as a competent entry-level surgical technologist, as assessed by instructor evaluation of the portfolio contents. 

  • Provide evidence of their technical competence in the surgical technologist role through the inclusion of performance evaluations, procedure logs, and skills assessments in their professional portfolio, as evaluated by instructor assessment. 

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the cognitive domain by accurately documenting their knowledge acquisition in surgical technology through the inclusion of relevant certifications, coursework, and continuing education records in their professional portfolio, as evaluated by instructor assessment. 

  • Exhibit the affective domain by showcasing their professionalism, ethical conduct, and effective communication skills through the inclusion of testimonials, reflective essays, projects, and examples of teamwork in their professional portfolio, as assessed through instructor evaluation and peer feedback.
