SURG 119 - Principles of Surgical Instrumentation

This course offers students practical knowledge of surgical instrumentation, encompassing a diverse array of instruments utilized in modern-day operating rooms. Students will gain expertise in identifying the proper names, correct spelling, functions, and classifications of these instruments. Emphasis will be placed on the assembly and disassembly of complex instrumentation, meticulous inspection for safety and quality assurance, as well as troubleshooting techniques. PREREQUISITE(S): SURG 104 & 105

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of surgical instruments, enabling them to navigate their usage effectively and contribute to optimal patient care in the operating room setting. 

  • Demonstrate the proper assembly/disassembly of surgical instruments. 

  • Explain and demonstrate how to inspect and troubleshoot instrumentation.  

  • Explain the difference in surgical instrumentation categories, uses, and functions.
