EDUC& 203 - Exceptional Child 3 Total Credits Recognize the characteristics and behavioral clues of children with special needs and how to support their development and work effectively as a team with diverse family needs. Accessing local resources and types of services available for both teachers and families are discussed.
Course Outcomes
- Describe typical and atypical development/behaviors of children birth to age eight.
- Identify characteristics of children with hearing, speech and vision disabilities.
- Identify characteristics of children with physical delays, attention deficit disorder, alcohol/drug affected children and other learning disabilities.
- Establish and apply effective ways to work with children with disabilities and their families, including effective cross cultural communication techniques.
- Identify and explain resources and services available in the community for children with disabilities and their families.
- Describe the process for identifying, making a referral, screening and seeking support services for children with special needs, and how to communicate this to families.
- Describe the ADA/IDEA laws and how they affect early childhood teachers.
