BIOL& 160 - General Biology 5 Total Credits Students explore the basic biological principles that describe and explain the nature of life. Topics include cell biology, molecular biology (including basic biochemistry and DNA structure and function), metabolism, and genetics. Laboratory work is included.
General education distribution area: Natural Science, with lab.

- Explain the structure and function of the four primary kinds of organic molecules.
- Explain cellular structure, functions, and transport.
- Explain the first and second laws of thermodynamics and apply them to examples in the body.
- Describe enzyme structure, functions, and importance.
- Describe the metabolic pathways for energy capture and release including cellular respiration and photosynthesis.
- Describe the steps and importance of cell division in mitosis and meiosis.
- Analyze Mendelian and non-Mendelian patterns of inheritance.
- Describe how DNA, RNA, and proteins are synthesized.
