AUTC 118 - Brakes


7 Total Credits
Students learn brake and anti-lock system theory, application, diagnosis and repair based on NATEF competencies through Web-based, classroom, and hands-on lab instruction in a live work environment. Topics include: hydraulic systems, drum brakes, disc brakes, power assist, wheel bearings, parking brakes, electrical systems, anti-lock brakes and traction control systems. Students prepare for ASE Certification test A-5.

Prerequisite(s): AUTC 101 , AUTC 112 , AUTC 117 .

Course Outcomes
  • Perform a majority of the NATEF tasks related to content area 

  • Perform an inspection of brake system 

  • Understand principles of hydraulic system operation including Pascal’s Law 

  • Diagnose brake system concerns 

  • Perform brake system repair 

  • Identify and isolate ABS concerns 

  • Resurface rotors and drums 

  • Service wheel bearings 

  • Be able to understand and describe or discuss requirements for their content course 

  • Use effective verbal communication with peers and instructors 

  • Interpret instructor feedback to improve skills and content knowledge base 

  • Effectively organize and manage their content course work requirements 

  • Demonstrate ability to prioritize and execute time management strategies when completing content course material
