GEOL& 101 - Introduction to Physical Geology 5 Credits Examines geologic processes that shape the Earth. Emphasis is placed on understanding the language and methods of science as applied to our changing planet. Students develop critical thinking skills and apply them to regional geology. Topics include earthquakes, volcanism, glaciers, rivers, and structure of the Earth. May include field trips. Includes laboratory.
General education distribution area: Natural Science, with lab.
Course Outcomes
- Explain fundamental geology concepts, including the following:
- physical and chemical properties of the lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere;
- geologic time and earth age;
- crustal materials and dynamics in the context of plate tectonics theory.
- Identify different minerals and rocks.
- Interpret geologic maps, data, hypotheses, and hazards, with particular attention paid to Washington state.
- Perform mathematical calculations in earth science problems.
- Articulate the societal relevance of earth systems.
- Use scientifically valid modes of inquiry, individually and collaboratively, to critically evaluate geological processes.
- Perform mathematical calculations in earth science problems.
- Effectively communicate geology knowledge in writing.
