The Surgical Technologist program is accredited nationally by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs in collaboration with the Association of Surgical Technologists and the American College of Surgeons.

In this program, the student is trained to become an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. Students will be taught to facilitate safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. The student will be trained to possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. A major portion of the course training occurs in a variety of regional healthcare facilities.

A certificate of completion is awarded upon successful completion of core course requirements (two attempts per course only). To earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) or Associate of Applied Science-Transfer (AAS-T) degree, students must complete the certificate program and meet general education course requirements. The prerequisite, a 5-credit Introduction to Anatomy & Physiology course, is part of the general education requirements for the AAS degree.
