MAP 138 - Coding 1 - Medical Coding Fundamentals

It is crucial to have knowledge in certain key areas: anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and pharmacology. The Medical Coding Foundational Skills course identifies skill sets and knowledge needed for successful medical coding career. Students will identify the types of documentation contained in health records; gain an understanding of medical office workflow systems; provide a brief overview of the health insurance claims process and identify desirable personality traits and on-the-job skills health insurance professionals.
Course Outcomes

  1. Explain types of documentation contained in health records.
  2. Identify the background and importance of accurate insurance claims submission, coding, and billing.
  3. Assess responsibilities assigned to insurance billing and coding specialists and electronic claims processors.
  4. Gain a brief understanding of medical office workflow systems and their complications.
  5. Provide a brief overview of the health insurance claims process.
  6. Identify desirable personality traits and on-the-job skills health insurance professionals should possess to optimize career success.
