MATH& 142 - Pre-Calculus II

This class focuses on trigonometry: trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions, their graphs, and transformations of their graphs, with applications to mathematical modeling;  trigonometric equations; and  the derivation and use of trigonometric identities. Content also covers polar coordinates and may include vectors and parametric equations. 

General education distribution area: Quantitative / Symbolic Reasoning.

Prerequisite(s): Completion of MATH& 141 with a 2.0 or higher, or placement by assessment.

Course Outcomes

Evaluate and graph trigonometric functions using both right-angle and unit-circle formulations through the lens of linear transformations.
Identify important features of trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions including domain, range, symmetry, period, amplitude and phase shift.
Verify trigonometric identities and simplify trigonometric expressions.
Solve trigonometric equations using trigonometric identities and inverse trigonometric functions.
Translate between polar and rectangular coordinates of equations and graphs.
Apply trigonometric, algebraic, and geometric concepts to answer word problems.
Communicate using mathematical notation and language.
