BIR 104 - Soldering and Brazing Techniques


2 Total Credits
Students learn the proper techniques of soft soldering and brazing woodwind and brasswind parts using acetylene and oxy-acetylene equipment. Information on the use of different types of solders and fluxes is included.

Course Outcomes
  1. Recognize and distinguish between the make-up of different lead based and non-lead based soft solders and their applications.
  2. Consistently demonstrate responsible behavior concerning the use of lead base solder and appropriate flux as pertaining to personal safety and the safety of others.
  3. Apply lab policies and procedures concerning proper use of equipment and storage of soldering materials in the BIRT lab.
  4. Demonstrate safe set up an air acetylene tank torch and regulator, including regulation of gas for proper efficient flame.
  5. Demonstrate safe operation of air acetylene torch.
  6. Show the set up a brace flange and two telescopic tubes for soldering, with emphasis on alignment, fit, appearance, and cleanliness.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to solder a brace flange and a telescopic joint in a clean, strong, leak free manner.
  8. Recognize the function and applications of brazing.
  9. Show the set-up of a broken woodwind key for brazing, with emphasis on alignment, fit, appearance, and cleanliness.
  10. Demonstrate the ability to braze a broken woodwind key, in a clean, strong, functional manner.
  11. Demonstrate the safety procedures, and dangers, of an oxy-acetylene torch set up. Student will be able to use this set up in a safe, responsible manner.
  12. Determine the best torch set up for the particular application.
