TAPE 133 - Texturing & Level 5 Finishing 3 Credits This course provides advanced hand and automatic tool techniques used to apply special surface textures and Level 5 Finishing. A Level 5 Finish is the highest degree of quality in drywall finishing. It requires all the operations of a Level 4 Finish with the addition of a skim coat of joint compound applied to cover the entire wall or ceiling area to provide a uniformly smooth surface. This level requires highly skilled labor. Apprentices will have the opportunity to learn and perform Level 5 Finishing during this course.
Course Outcomes
- Identify and describe the different types of texture (i.e.,):
- Identify protective covering such as polyethylene sheeting, stapled or taped and masked machine.
- Demonstrate general texture spraying techniques.
- Demonstrate how to apply different types of texture (i.e.,):
- Knockdown
- Splatter
- Skip
- Troweling
- Spanish Style
- Brick and Stone Imitations
- Orange Peel
- Identify and properly use the different types of texturing machines.
- Demonstrate the cleaning procedures for texturing machines.
- Describe techniques of repairing damaged texture.
- Describe various types of hand texturing such as one-coat stipple patterns.
- Identify the materials and tools needed for a Level 5 Finish.
- Properly assess wall conditions prior the application process.
- “Walk the Walls”- Systematically review work through a sequence of operation.
- Produce quality of work to a Level 4 Finish as described by the Northwest Wall and Ceiling Bureau.
- Demonstrate safe work ergonomics.
- Successfully pass a hands-on examination with machine tools at the end of the course.
