TAPE 131 - Basic Hand Finishing & Patchwork 3 Credits This course develops basic hand finishing skills using the correct tools and materials. Training will include a description of finishing levels, hand tool manipulation, reinforce material identification, selection, mixture preparation and a variety of patchwork techniques. Key processes and application techniques will be presented and apprentices will have chance to practice skills.

- Knives and mud pans
- Trowels and hawks
- Joint tape dispensers
- Joint compound mixing tools
- Joint compound rollers
- Demonstrate the knowledge and use of proper hand finishing tools.
- Properly assess wall conditions prior the application process.
- “Walk the Walls”- Systematically review work through a sequence of operation.
- Set up appropriate mixing area.
- Demonstrate proper consistency of taping compound mixture.
- Demonstrate the knowledge and use of the basic steps of wall preparation, hand taping and wiping procedures.
- Demonstrate common patchwork procedures.
- Identify proper trim and bead installation procedures when using joint compound, spray, adhesive and fasteners.
- Recognize various types of problems that occur in drywall finishes; identify the causes and correct methods for problem solving each method.
- Demonstrate safe work ergonomics.
- Successfully pass a hands-on evaluation at the end of the course.
