SUR 235 - Boundary Law

This course is an overview of the legal aspects of surveying and the responsibilities of the surveyor. Topics include excesses and deficiencies, occupation vs. title, encroachments, records of survey, ALTA surveys, boundary law, water boundaries, monuments, streets and easements.

Course Outcomes

Identify and describe the principle statutes governing boundary surveying in the state of Washington.
Describe how boundaries are created and retraced
Identify the principles of ownership, transfer, and descriptions of real property
Determine the boundaries of sequentially versus simultaneously created titles.
Describe the essential elements in the law of adverse possession and easements by prescription
Describe the principles of locating boundaries of seabed, lakebed, riverbed ownerships and water rights.
