MILL 144 - Introduction to Foreman/Supervisor Training

The goal for this course is to educate and empower the student for success in the roles of journeyman, supervisor, and apprentice mentor. Materials from the UBC’s “Stepping up to Foreman” and Mark Breslin’s “Survival of the Fittest” are used in conjunction with other training material to prepare apprentices for a leadership role on the jobsite.

Course Outcomes

Describe and identify motives, and the power behind them.
Understand that poor communication results in bad performance.
Know the basic process and elements involved in communication.
Identify potential problems in the planning stage.
Understand the key differences between craftsmen and supervisor.
Know the importance of listening.
Understand and develop skills to overcome barriers to communication.
Understand cost control and the relationship between estimates and budget.
